Overview

Medicinal Genomics offers a selection of laboratory consumables — including plastic plates, seals, and related plasticware — through our webstore as a convenience to our customers. These items are the same consumables validated and used in our published methods and workflows.

This article explains our consumables program, purchasing considerations, and the quality management obligations that apply when customers choose to source equivalent consumables from alternative suppliers.

Why We Offer Consumables

Consumables are offered as a value-added service to streamline procurement for our customers. By sourcing the same plasticware used during method development and validation, customers can reduce the risk of performance variability introduced by material substitutions.

Important purchasing notes:

  • No profit margin: Medicinal Genomics does not profit from the sale of consumables. These items are offered at or near cost as a convenience service.
  • Price fluctuations: Pricing is subject to change based on supplier costs. Medicinal Genomics cannot control or guarantee pricing stability for consumable items.
  • Inventory: While we make every effort to maintain adequate stock levels, inventory availability cannot always be guaranteed.Customers with time-sensitive requirements are encouraged to maintain their own safety stock.
  • Shipping: Consumables normally ship with Ground service to control costs. Same-day or expedited shipping of consumables may not be possible.
Use of Alternative Consumable Suppliers

Customers are not required to purchase consumables through Medicinal Genomics. However, the consumables listed on our webstore represent the specific materials evaluated and validated during development of our methods and assays.

If a customer elects to source consumables from an alternative supplier — including items described as equivalent, comparable, or interchangeable — those materials fall outside the scope of Medicinal Genomics method validation. In regulated and accredited laboratory environments, the use of non-validated materials constitutes a change to a validated method or procedure.

Quality Management Requirement: Laboratories operating under a quality management system (QMS) — including but not limited to ISO/IEC 17025, ISO 15189, CLIA, A2LA, or similar accreditation frameworks — are responsible for following their own internal procedures for reagent and consumable qualification when substituting materials not validated by Medicinal Genomics. This includes performing appropriate verification studies, updating relevant SOPs, and maintaining documentation in accordance with your laboratory’s QMS and applicable accreditation requirements.

Customer Responsibilities When Using Alternative Consumables

Laboratories substituting consumables from non-validated sources should consider the following, as required by their QMS and applicable regulatory or accreditation body:

  • Supplier qualification: Evaluate and document the suitability of the alternative supplier per your laboratory’s approved vendor qualification procedure.
  • Method verification: Conduct in-house verification or performance comparison studies to confirm the substitute material does not adversely affect assay performance, including specificity, sensitivity, and reproducibility.
  • Change control: Document the material change through your laboratory’s formal change control process, including a risk assessment and any required supervisory or quality officer sign-off.
  • SOP updates: Revise applicable standard operating procedures to reflect the use of the alternative consumable and ensure staff are trained on any changes.
  • Record retention: Retain all verification records, lot certificates, and supplier documentation in accordance with your accreditation requirements and applicable regulations.
