There are 55 organisms listed in Table 3 of the AOAC SMPR for Detection of Total Yeast and Mold on a Cannabis Matrix. Medicinal Genomics PathoSEEK Total Yeast and Mold Detection Assay detects 51 of the 55 organisms listed. This exceptional breadth of detection ensures robust and reliable results across the organisms most relevant to cannabis safety and quality testing.
There are 4 organisms that the PathoSEEK TYM Detection Assay does not detect. They require either very specific and unusual growth conditions or fail to grow at all on culture plates within standard growth times and temperatures. Laboratories utilizing standard plating techniques would also be unable to reliably detect these organisms. PathoSEEK's failure to detect these species is functionally irrelevant in practical, real world testing environments.
Organisms with non-standard growth conditions
Arthrinium arundinis
-
Requires highly specific growth conditions (24°C with black light, 12h on/12h off).
-
Will not grow under standard lab conditions (26°C, no light).
Phytophthora infestans
- Requires specific growth conditions (2 to 3 weeks at 20 °C)
Organisms that do not grow under standard growth conditions
Botrytis cinerea
- Does not grow on agar plates under standard conditions (inside 72 hours)
- ATCC organism tested (see plating results below).
Scopulariopsis acremonium
- Does not grow on agar plates under standard conditions (inside 72 hours)
- ATCC organism tested (see plating results below).
Plating Results
Growth Conditions Tested at MGC:
- DRBC (Dichloran Rose Bengal Agar): 4-8 days @ 26C
- 3M Yeast and Mold Petrifilm: 4-8 days @ 26C
Results: Botrytis cinerea
Results: Scopulariopsis acremonium
Conclusions
- No growth was observed on Scopulariopsis acremonium plates until day 5 and only on 3M YM plates
- No growth was observed on Botrytis cinerea plates (DRBC or 3M YM) after 8 days of incubation
- Testing Labs do not allow plates to incubate longer than 72 hours, therefore these two organisms will never fail on agar plates.
